The Trust In Action - Welcome to Xanana Vocational Education Trust

dili institute of technology (DIT)

In its earliest stages, the Trust established relationships with a new and vibrant vocational education and training provider in East Timor – Dili Institute of Technology (DIT). This has given us a good understanding of what is needed and the obstacles to overcome.

The Trust will continue to support the building of DIT into a vital new provider of vocational training in Timor-Leste.

Following the troubles in East Timor in May/June 2006, the Trust has established a DIT Support Program to help DIT survive and grow.

helping all institutions in Timor-Leste

The Trust has approved a series of pilot programs at the start of 2006 to assist a range of vocational education institutions.

Students will be able to train at DIT in a new Certificate course in Automotive to commence in 2006. Automotive skills are essential for the country's transport system to develop and grow.

The government vocational school at Becora, a suburb of Dili, is being funded to enable Hospitality students to gain hands-on practical experience in hospitality.

Good office skills are essential to enable all kinds of government and private organisations to function well and efficiently. The East Timor Development Agency will receive funding to enable unemployed students to gain these skills.

East Timor is very rural society and the development of good agricultural skills is essential. The Don Bosco agricultural school at Fuiloro, near East Timor's eastern tip, will receive funding to help train young rural students and give them essential agricultural skills.

These re-skilling programs are being funded on the basis of need and with clearly set out criteria for funding, accountability and transparency.

How you can help

sponsoring students

The Trust's programs are designed to help the whole vocational sector in East Timor to grow into a self sustaining system.

Many programs have substantial capital needs to provide the infrastructure to ensure vocational students have the necessary facilities to properly learn their skills. These needs are funded by the Trust as specific projects. Agreements between the Trust and the institutions include appropriate requirements relating to student skill outcomes.

VET Development donations provide the necessary funds for these projects and are a vital part of the Trust's work.
