Luke McNamara

Luke McNamara provides the Trust with a very recent and ongoing involvement in, and understanding of, the needs of East Timor in the field of Vocational Education and Training. He was appointed as the United Nations special advisor on Employment & Skills Development in 2003. By the end of 2004, he had assisted the fledgling government to draft its first VET Legislation through his capacity building work with the Department of Labour and Solidarity in East Timor. His contacts within the various Ministries and with industry will be a vital ingredient in the long-term success of the Xanana Vocational Education Trust.

During the 1980’s Luke lived and worked in the USA and Mexico. For the first 6 years he was based in Los Angeles where he was responsible for the financial recovery of two companies in the timber milling and packaging industries. Following this ‘school of hard knocks’, he moved to New York where he assisted with the purchase and management of five companies including a major paper milling conglomerate.
At various stages in his 15 years with TAFE NSW, he has chaired the Board of management of the Western Institute of TAFE, he inaugurated the Institute Council and the Institute Awards and he has managed and/or participated in more than 80 offshore projects in countries such as East Timor, PNG, Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand, Mexico and the United Arab Emirates.
Luke is a Director, Australian Learning, Educational Resources & Training Pty Ltd [since 1995]; and Director of Luke McNamara & Associates – Economic Development Advisors.
He was the TAFE NSW Marketing representative on the Commercial Pricing Policy Review in 1993
He was NSW initiator of the state-wide Training Partnership Program servicing major clients in 1999
In his current TAFE NSW position, Luke is responsible for Educational Planning; Media & Promotions; Student Services and Business Systems; New Apprenticeships, Traineeships & Contestable Funding; Curriculum Development and Resource Printing; and International Projects.
