Professor David Beanland AO

Professor David G Beanland AO FTSE, BE (University of Melbourne), MSc, PhD (University of Salford, UK), TTTC, FIE Aust., FIREE Aust., was the founding Vice-Chancellor of, and was instrumental in achieving university status for, the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University). He retired as Vice-Chancellor in 2000.
Professor Beanland was awarded a Centenary Medal on 1 Jan 2001 and was made an Officer of the Order of Australia on 26 Jan 2001 for service to education, particularly in the areas of teaching, research and academic leadership, to electronic engineering and microelectronics research, and to the community.
David Beanland was born in Yallourn, educated at Box Hill Technical School, Swinburne Technical College where he completed a Diploma of Electrical Engineering, and the University of Melbourne where in 1959 he completed a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) degree with honors. He studied teacher training at the Technical Teachers' College. His father Charles was principal of several technical colleges in Melbourne.
David has been active in the Institution of Engineers, Australia, the Institution of Radio and Electronic Engineers, Australia; and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, and has been a fellow of all three. In Who’s Who Australia he lists his interests as travel, hiking, sport and building. David and Heather Beanland have a daughter, three sons and four grandchildren. Heather Beanland has been a respected and popular ambassador for RMIT University on their overseas travels and in their many university obligations
